WinContig v2.3.0.0

billon on 10 Sep 2018
  • 4MB (uncompressed)
  • Released on 10 Sep 2018
  • Suggested by MarcoNovaro

WinContig is an easy-to-use file defragmentation program that allows defrag of parts of the drive. This is useful for squeezing extra performance out of important or frequently used files or programs without wasting time and energy cleaning up the rest of the drive.

Note that this is recommended only on magnetic disks. Flash-based drives (SSDs and thumb drives) don't benefit from defragmentation and such maintenance tools can reduce the life of the drive.

The program engine is based on the standard Microsoft defragmentation API and allows you to group files into profiles, accepting a number of available command-line switches for additional control.

aw, i just ran v1 and it crashed on my XP SP3 system. So I guess they don't have all the bugs worked out yet. To bad.

portafreeuser on 2012-02-09 05:28

OK, I ran a newer version on my XP SP3 system and it worked just fine. Thanks for a nice easy defrag program with some nice display information and command line features. I actually like how the pre-version 1 versions looked better (less cluttered), but at least this works and doesn't crash and is portable and simple.

Sysinternals' lean Contig.exe v1.8 (248KB) CLI will defrag selected files just as well…;-)

Bonus point: still behaves under WinXP...;-)

Minor annoyance nitpick:

WifiHistoryView v1.10 "Help/About" version tab mistakenly displays as v1.06
(However, the internal PE version tags correctly return version 1.10)

Within the minimalist checksum calculators genre, Robin Keir's diminutive Hash.exe (28Kb) is even leaner...;-)

Local DB entry details here : http://www.vleadtek.com/index.php?id=1082

Midas on 2018-06-19 07:47

Very minimal indeed -- doesn't take command line input (e.g., 'pockethash somefile.exe'), produces no output other than what it shows in GUI. The saving grace is its VirusTotal integration.

Under Windows 7 (and probably Vista), you may need to run this program as Administrator for it to work.
'SmartSniff' (also from Nirsoft) already has a manifest that will ask for Elevated Privileges.. not sure why this one was missed?

pretty cool program. useful for adding domains to a hosts file or IP addresses to a PeerBlock type of app.

works on raw sockets for me on winXP SP3 so no need to install anything.
